What Robusta Grade 3 is
Grade 3 is the price grade of Vietnam Robusta. It allows 20–25% black and broken beans, and more than 80% of the lot stays on a screen 13. Moisture is 12.5% at most. The grade is sold at three levels of foreign matter: 7%, 5% or 3%.
It is not a coffee for whole-bean retail. It is bought by industries that turn coffee into extract, where the beans’ looks do not matter and price per tonne does.
Three foreign-matter levels
| Preparation | Moisture | Foreign matter | Black & broken | Screen |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| G3, BB 20/25%, FM 7% | 12.5% | 7% | 20–25% | Screen 13 over 80% |
| G3, BB 20/25%, FM 5% | 12.5% | 5% | 20–25% | Screen 13 over 80% |
| G3, BB 20/25%, FM 3% | 12.5% | 3% | 20–25% | Screen 13 over 80% |
Moisture, foreign matter and defects are maximums. The screen figure is a minimum.
Foreign matter is husk, sticks, stones and dust. It is paid for at the price of coffee but gives no coffee. So the right choice depends on your own cleaning. If you clean at your plant, 7% FM costs least. If you do not, 3% FM gives more coffee per tonne.
Who buys Grade 3
- Soluble (instant) coffee makers, who extract the coffee and do not see the beans.
- Makers of low-cost blends and ground coffee for price-driven markets.
- Traders who re-clean and re-grade.

How to compare Grade 3 offers
Grade 3 prices vary more than any other grade, because the specification allows a wide range. When you compare offers, check four numbers side by side: foreign matter, black and broken, screen 13 percentage and moisture. An offer that looks cheap may simply allow more foreign matter.
How the lot is checked
Before loading, samples from your lot are checked for moisture, foreign matter, black and broken beans and screen against your contract. If your contract names SGS, Control Union or Vinacontrol, they inspect the lot as well. You receive photos of your cargo and the container number before documents are released.
Documents
Usually a certificate of origin, a phytosanitary certificate, a fumigation certificate where required, a certificate of quality and quantity, a packing list, a commercial invoice and the bill of lading. EU buyers: EUDR due-diligence documentation — [STATUS]. Ask before the contract.
How to order
- Send the FM level, volume, destination port and Incoterm by WhatsApp or the enquiry form. We reply within one working day, Vietnam time (UTC+7).
- Approve a sealed sample. It becomes the reference sample in the contract.
- Sign: CIF or CFR (CNF), FOB on request. L/C at sight, or a T/T deposit with the balance against documents.
- The lot is inspected and loaded. You receive photos, the container number and the documents.
Questions buyers ask
Can I set food-safety limits on Grade 3?
Yes. Your contract can add limits for mould, ochratoxin A or any other test your market requires, and the lot is tested against them before loading.
Can I get Grade 3 with less than 20% black and broken?
That is closer to a Grade 2. See Robusta Grade 2, Screen 13, or send your figures and we will quote them.
HS code
