What Robusta Screen 16 is
Robusta Screen 16 is green Robusta coffee from Vietnam, sorted so that more than 90% of the beans stay on a screen 16. A screen 16 has holes of 16/64 of an inch, about 6.35 mm. The standard preparation also allows nothing below screen 13, so there are no small beans or chips in the lot.
It is a Grade 1 coffee, graded to TCVN 4193, from the Central Highlands. Screen 16 sits between Screen 13 and Screen 18. It is a popular grade for roasters who want good bean size at a lower price than Screen 18.
Three preparations
| Preparation | Moisture | Foreign matter | Defects | Screen |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| G1 S16, 2% — standard | 12.5% | 0.5% | Black & broken 2% | Screen 16 over 90% · nothing below screen 13 |
| G1 S16 clean | 12.5% | 0.1% | Black 0.1% · broken 0.3% | Screen 16 over 90% |
| G1 WP16 (wet polished) | 12.5% | 0.1% | Black 0.1% · broken 0.3% | Polished over 90% |
Moisture, foreign matter and defects are maximums. Screen and polish figures are minimums.
How to choose
- Standard, 2%: the most traded form. It is right for blending, for soluble coffee, and for buyers who sort again.
- Clean: the beans are colour-sorted to take out black and broken beans. It is right for roasters who sell single-origin Robusta or who are strict on defects.
- Wet polished: the beans are clean and polished with water for a bright, even look. It is right for whole-bean retail.
